Nobody documented the wisdom, tested the wisdom against Scripture and scholarship, or turned the wisdom into something transferable to the next generation of leaders. Because of this, the experience stays trapped in one pastor’s memory instead of becoming a body of work others can build on top of.
Grace School of Theology built the Doctor of Ministry to change this pattern.
A Doctorate Built on Real Ministry, Not a Classroom Hypothetical
The DMin is a 30 credit hour program reserved for pastors and ministry leaders who already hold a Master of Divinity and have completed at least three years of ministry since earning the degree. Admission also requires a 3.0 GPA, at least one year of biblical Greek, and a short theological research paper demonstrating the ability to write and think at a graduate level.
The center of the program is Ministry Project I and II, an applied research requirement built directly around a real challenge pulled from the student’s own ministry.
The doctorate gets built on top of ministry already in progress, joined to the work rather than separated from the work.
A Format Built Around a Pastor Who Stays
Every course in the DMin runs on an intensive block format with three parts. About two months of pre-residency reading and assignments comes first. A one week residency, held remotely, follows, built around focused classroom interaction with faculty mentors and fellow ministry leaders. About two months of post-residency work closes the course, applying what was studied directly back into the student’s ministry.
No part of this requires relocating a family or stepping down from a pulpit. A senior pastor in Ohio, a missionary training leaders in West Africa, or a para-church director running a national ministry complete the same course on the same schedule, without any of them leaving the ministry they already lead.
Most students complete the full 30 credit hours in about four years, and up to 9 credits transfer in from prior Master of Theology or Doctor of Ministry coursework already completed elsewhere.
Who Benefits Most
Grace built the program with three groups in mind. Senior, lead, and associate pastors currently carrying a church benefit from a structured way to sharpen decades of instinct into documented, defensible ministry theology. Para-church leaders serving with organizations such as Young Life or CRU gain the same sharpening applied to a different ministry context. International ministry leaders preparing to train the next generation of local leaders in their own countries gain a credential and a research framework built for exactly this task.
The Cost and the Credential
Tuition runs $400 per credit hour, and Grace holds accreditation from TRACS, reaffirmed through 2035, and from the Association of Theological Schools. The degree carries real academic standing, and the research produced along the way tends to outlive the degree itself, becoming a resource a church or ministry organization keeps using long after graduation.

Every experienced pastor eventually asks a version of the same question: does two decades of ministry wisdom stay in my head, or does the wisdom become something documented, tested, and useful to the leaders who come after me.
