Grace English Language Program

Grace English Language Program (GELP) is a non-degree seminary preparation program offered to eligible Grace seminary prospects and students whose native language is not English. It explores the standard sounds and structures of the English language as it is used in academic, professional, and business settings.
Biblical Studies Certificate (BSC)
The program also incorporates these elements:

  • aspects of American culture and its impact on foreign staff and students
  • communication principles for a variety of language functions in different settings
  • community-building activities with language immersion

The ultimate goal of the program is to prepare prospects and students for success in a professional, business, and academic environment, as well as enhance their English communication skills for global church and marketplace ministries.

Services

We offer the following services:

Alternative Language Placement (ALP)

  • We provide FREE alternative language placement services before a seminary applicant is required to take the iTEP exam.

English language training for academic and professional/business purposes

  • We offer group and individual coaching for GELP students who need academic and/or business English training.

English Language Training

​​Grace English Language Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of a course, the student will be able to:

  1. Increase awareness of his/her English language ability and therefore develop effective strategies for enhancing language learning and mastery.
  2. Use principles of effective oral and written English communication to address communication challenges in academic, professional, and/or business settings.
  3. Gain familiarity with cultural aspects of American academia, and efficiently use online/offline tools and resources in a remote classroom.
  4. Create lasting relationships within the Grace community through authentic English interactions with staff, professors, and students.

Academic English Certificate

ESG-042. Grammar and Rhetoric in Seminary Writing (3 units)

This course introduces upper intermediate grammar with basic rhetorical concepts applied in seminary writing.

ESR-033. Reading, Writing, and Study Skills for Hybrid Seminary Learning (3 units)

This course provides students with tools for academic success in a hybrid seminary. It introduces Grace systems and student success tools while developing academic reading, writing, and study skills in a distance learning setting.

Professional and Business English Courses

ESP-034 English Basics: A Grammar Refresher for Professionals (2 units)

This is a refresher on basic English items like grammar, word usage, intonation, pronunciation, and basic conversational skills. The course is a prerequisite for Conversational English and introduces special learning packets on ministry or workplace communication.

ESP-035 Conversational English: Speak Like a Pro! (2 units)

This is a course featuring a brief introduction to basic conversational skills for general and workplace communication. Principles of effective communication and effective communication styles are highlighted in the course.

Course Rates

Our GELP courses are:
  • FREE for all international GSOT staff and students
  • $20 per credit unit for seminary applicants
  • $60 per 3-credit course (units credited to seminary applicants’ GELP certificate)

We offer English language training to international seminary applicants and students. To be eligible for training, first-time seminary applicants can take the iTEP exam for FREE.
