A Story of Grace and Mission Among the Marginalized
In the middle of bivocational ministry in the Philippines, Benigno “Bong” Durana Jr. was carrying a growing burden to serve with greater biblical depth and clarity. His work among the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable had already shown him how much ministry demands both compassion and conviction. As he pursued theological training, he found a rigorous and spiritually enriching experience that deepened his understanding of Scripture, strengthened his ministry, and gave him a clearer grasp of God’s grace.
The student discipleship group at Grace is extremely helpful for me in building me as a minister.
Benigno “Bong” Durana Jr. from the Philippines recently completed his Master of Arts in Biblical Studies while serving as a bivocational minister at Greenhills Christian Fellowship, where he is involved in an integral mission to the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. Already serving as an elder and minister in his local church, Bong entered theological study with a clear desire: to deepen his theological foundation so he could serve more faithfully and effectively.
His decision to pursue formal study came through the encouragement of his senior pastor, to whom he had expressed his desire for deeper theological training. As he considered where to study, several things stood out to him: a highly competent faculty and staff, a strong online platform, lean but effective administrative support, and a deep, comprehensive curriculum designed to serve students across different ministry levels and contexts.
“My education deepened my knowledge and understanding of the Word.”
For Bong, the impact of theological education reached far beyond the classroom. He shares that his studies helped him manage the ministry entrusted to him by his church, while also contributing significantly to his own spiritual maturity. That combination of ministry usefulness and personal transformation became one of the defining marks of his journey.
Academically, he describes the experience as both mentally challenging and spiritually fulfilling. He valued every part of the program—the curriculum, reference materials, lectures, discussions, assignments, and practical exercises. For him, these were not isolated academic requirements but carefully designed tools to help students become more confident and competent in sharing and defending their faith.
Another especially meaningful part of his experience was the student discipleship group. Bong found it deeply helpful in shaping him as a minister. Through that community, he was able to share life, receive encouragement, and be built up by fellow believers from across the globe. That kind of fellowship, he suggests, is a rare and valuable gift for any Bible student.
Among the many courses that influenced him, one stood out in a particularly profound way: soteriology from the perspective of Free Grace theology. Bong describes this as one of the most precious discoveries of his studies. The course helped clarify important questions and lingering uncertainties he still had regarding salvation and eternal security. For him, this was not merely intellectual clarification. It was deeply personal and spiritually liberating.
He also points to courses in the basis of Free Grace theology and Christian apologetics as especially significant. Together, these courses helped reinforce and connect key doctrines in a way that brought clarity, coherence, and conviction. The result was a renewed appreciation for the truth that salvation is fully by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. “We are fully saved by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.”
For Bong, this truth is not merely a doctrine to affirm. It is a source of joy, assurance, and freedom. He describes grace as love freely given and never able to be lost. That understanding became one of the most precious gifts he received through his theological education. Rather than leaving him satisfied in a shallow sense, it gave him a deeper hunger to know God more.
Looking back, Bong says there was never any doubt that the entire journey was worth it. Having completed his Master of Arts in Biblical Studies in spring 2025, he now hopes to continue toward a Master of Divinity and, if God wills, eventually pursue a doctoral degree in ministry. His educational journey has not ended; if anything, it has increased his desire to keep growing in truth and service.
That is why he recommends this path so strongly to others considering theological education. In his view, it is one of the best decisions a person can make. His testimony is rooted not only in academic gain but in what this journey has done in his heart, doctrine, ministry, and vision for the future.
Bong’s story is a compelling reminder that theological education can strengthen those already serving on the front lines of ministry. It can deepen understanding, clarify conviction, nurture spiritual maturity, and sustain a lifelong hunger for God. For those called to serve the church and the world with both truth and compassion, his journey offers a vivid picture of what that kind of formation can produce.
