Finding Grace at the Breaking Point

Roy Buenviaje was already serving as a pastor in Manila when his desire for deeper theological training began to take clearer shape. He was looking for more than a degree—he wanted biblical clarity, gospel-centered formation, and a way to keep growing without stepping away from the ministry God had already entrusted to him. What he found was not only rigorous training, but also a grace-filled community that sustained him through one of the most difficult seasons his family would face.

The curriculum is Christ-centered and practical. The flexible online format allowed me to stay in ministry while studying.
Roy Buenviaje, from Manila, Philippines, is currently pursuing a Master of Divinity while serving as a pastor at Doulos Faith Christian Church International. His desire for seminary training grew from a simple but serious goal: to deepen his understanding of Scripture and become better equipped to lead and teach in ministry. What drew him most was a strong biblical foundation, clear gospel-centered teaching, and a commitment to theological clarity.
The flexibility of online learning also made a significant difference. Because the format allowed him to remain active in ministry while studying, Roy was able to continue serving without stepping away from his pastoral responsibilities. For him, the program was not only doctrinally strong but also practical and attainable for someone already deeply engaged in ministry.
As Roy continued his studies, he found himself strengthened not only by the content of the courses but also by the sense of spiritual and theological growth that came with them. He appreciated that the program was accessible across countries, affordable for international students, and accredited—qualities that gave credibility both for the ministry and for further education. Yet for him, the experience was about more than convenience or credentials. It was about growth, formation, and preparation for faithful service.
Academically, the journey was both challenging and rewarding. Roy especially found the biblical languages and theology courses rigorous, yet deeply beneficial. He also treasured the live classroom discussions, where instructors thoughtfully engaged serious theological questions. That combination of scholarly depth and real pastoral relevance helped make the classroom experience especially meaningful.
But one of the clearest testimonies of his journey came during a deeply difficult family season. While balancing ministry, family responsibilities, and academics, Roy and his wife were also caring for his mother-in-law after she was diagnosed with lung cancer. The hospital visits, sleepless nights, and emotional burden made it difficult to keep up with reading assignments and coursework. At one point, Roy even planned to drop all his classes.
What changed that moment was the grace he encountered through the school’s support system. After reaching out to an academic advisor, he was encouraged to speak with his professors. In response, they gave him the time and help he needed to complete his requirements. That experience left a lasting impression on him. In a season of hardship, he was met not with indifference but with patience, understanding, and support.
“The staff and faculty were so gracious, and they were so supportive of every student.”
For Roy, that spirit of grace is not merely a theological idea. It has become part of the way he understands ministry itself. He shares that grace is more than a doctrine to study—it is a way of life. The message of God’s unconditional love and Christ’s finished work has reshaped the way he leads, preaches, teaches, prays, and sees people.
That transformation is at the heart of his story. Seminary has helped him handle the Word of God with greater clarity and disciple others with deeper conviction. But the roots of that desire go back even further. Roy was first called into ministry while working as a professional musician and session keyboardist for local artists in the Philippines. During that season, he began reaching out to fellow musicians and organizing small-group Bible studies. He and his wife also started a Bible study in her workplace. Over time, those gatherings grew into a small church plant.
That growth stirred in him a desire for greater doctrinal clarity. He wanted to ensure that his passion for ministry was grounded in sound theology. Seminary became the place where that passion could be strengthened, refined, and aligned more fully with Scripture.
“Grace is more than a doctrine to study. It is a way of life.”
Looking back, Roy sees theological education not merely as a degree path but as a discipleship journey. It has shaped the way he serves the church, clarified the message he proclaims, and given him tools to minister with greater integrity. His recommendation is clear: this path is for those who want to know the Word, live by grace, and serve the church faithfully.
Roy’s story is a reminder that theological education can do more than sharpen the mind. It can sustain a pastor through suffering, deepen conviction in the gospel, and strengthen a lifetime of ministry. For those seeking biblical depth, pastoral clarity, and a grace-filled community, his journey offers a compelling picture of what that formation can look like.
